[ARCHIVED] Montgomery Promotes Officer Chris Johnson to Sergeant

Sergeant Johnson Promotion Ceremony 063025

The Montgomery Police Department announces the promotion of Officer Chris Johnson to the rank of Sergeant, effective June 30, 2025. This promotion reflects Johnson's exceptional dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving the Montgomery community.

Throughout his 18-year career with the Montgomery Police Department, Johnson has served in various capacities, including field training officer (FTO), detective, firearms instructor, and certified drone operator. He is a member of the Kane County Honor Guard and the drone program. He spent the first part of this year as a class supervisor for the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy (SLEA) at the College of DuPage, training and mentoring new law enforcement recruits throughout the region. Additionally, Johnson serves in the United States Navy Reserves as a Petty Officer First Class.

His passion for law enforcement was inspired by an athletic dean while playing soccer for Waubonsee Community College. Initially, he thought he wanted to be a firefighter or paramedic, but the dean suggested that criminal justice might be a better fit for him, and he fell in love with the curriculum and the career path. Later, he transferred to Western Illinois University, where he received a degree in law enforcement and justice administration with a minor in sociology.

Over the years, he has distinguished himself through his work in patrol, community policing, and special assignments, consistently earning the respect of his peers and the community.

"Sergeant Johnson has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the Montgomery Police Department," said Chief of Police Phil Smith. "His leadership qualities, experience, and dedication to the safety and well-being of our residents make him an excellent fit for this new role."

In his new position, Johnson will assume the supervisory responsibilities of one of the Village's two overnight shifts, mentoring officers and helping to lead daily operations to ensure continued excellence in service delivery. His promotion is part of the department's ongoing efforts to recognize talent within the ranks and strengthen its leadership team.

A formal swearing-in ceremony was held at the Montgomery Police Department on Monday, June 30, 2025, where family and colleagues gathered to celebrate this important milestone.

The Montgomery Police Department congratulates Sergeant Chris Johnson on this well-earned achievement and looks forward to his continued leadership and service.
