[ARCHIVED] Montgomery to Host Eagle Counting Event

The Village of Montgomery is teaming up with the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to offer area residents an opportunity to participate in the 2014 Great Backyard Bird Count. Area families and friends are invited to gather at the Montgomery Village Hall at 9:00 a.m. on February 15th. After brief instructions, guided tours will be conducted in small groups to view and record sightings of eagles, hawks, egrets and other types of birds along the scenic Fox River.

Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, scopes, cameras and to dress warmly and for forecasted weather conditions. Volunteers will help participants identify male, female and juvenile eagles and several varieties of hawks. After counting is completed, the groups will return to the Village Hall for hot chocolate and to discuss and compare pictures and data collected. The numbers collected will be submitted to the Great Backyard Bird County website. The event will end around 10:30 a.m.

Volunteers who are somewhat knowledgeable about different types of birds are still needed to accompany the various small groups and help identify species. For additional information or to volunteer, please call John Aman at 630-974-8222.
