[ARCHIVED] Chlorine Smell in Water?

As part of the Village of Montgomery’s continued upgrades to our water treatment processes, the Water Division has been working on chlorine system modifications which will ultimately improve finished water quality across the distribution system.

Chlorine Gas is added to the treated water to protect against potential bacteria growth as the water navigates our distribution system towards the end users.

As part of our upgrades and improved process, the chlorine feed rate has become adjustable rather than fixed.  This allows us to react to naturally changing ammonia levels in the ground water.

As we work to find the correct nexus in our newly automated process, the water is manually tested regularly.  The controlled presence of chlorine in the water is safe for consumption and the feed rates will remain within the EPA allowable ranges at all times.

Some water customers may experience chlorine related taste and odor issues while these necessary adjustments are made.  If you are sensitive to the odor, waiting a short 5 seconds will typically allow the water to off gas making it less offensive to your senses.  We anticipate this process could last into the early part of April 2017.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Jack Rosenstiel, Utility Supervisor for the Village at 630-896-9241.
